Mr. K.M.G. (Kim) Demandt
Attorney
Why are you working at Hertoghs?
I had a job as a tax adviser while I worked towards my degree in tax law and general law, but I soon found out that I am an attorney at heart. I decided to join Hertoghs to indulge my interest in the specific area where tax law and criminal law intersect. This is how I can provide added value for clients when they are at odds with the tax authorities or the Public Prosecution Service.
What attracts you in Hertoghs’ areas of expertise?
I am fascinated by the specialist combination of these two fields of law in our services to clients. Sometimes they intersect and overlap, and sometimes they barely coexist. This is when you need to be creative as an attorney and carefully weigh the client’s best interests.
What is your particular expertise and how did you develop it?
Based on my expertise in both criminal law and tax law, I offer legal counsel to clients who are suspected of fraud. I have been trained in both fields and I am committed to my continuing professional development in these areas. But that is not enough. Every case is different, so I consider it my mission to combine my affinity with tax and criminal law with the will to win and to put up the best possible defence for my clients, who often feel like the underdog when they are facing off with a government body.
What is your definition of a good attorney?
There is more to it than meets the eye. To me, this expression captures the multifacetedness of what it means to be a good attorney. A case is more than a legal issue; there is a person behind it. Expertise is the first thing that comes to mind. Other important aspects are legal savvy, strategic thinking and the ability to interact with the client at the right level and to connect with them. A good attorney offers counsel and support.
What can you share about your private life?
I enjoy spending time with people, having a heart-to-heart and travelling, preferably all at the same time.
