Why are you working at Hertoghs?
I studied both tax law and criminal law. Hertoghs advocaten offers specialist legal services in the area where these two fields of law intersect. That makes our work very interesting. We work on cases as a team, which creates a dynamic work environment that I enjoy a lot. As colleagues, we help each other out and we get along. That is very important to me as well.
What attracts you in Hertoghs’ areas of expertise?
The cases we work on are highly relevant. Almost every one of us has dealings with the taxman, which means that we can all get embroiled in a tax or – worse – a criminal investigation. To me, this really nails down what we do, even if tax law is typically considered a technical and abstract field. What is more, tax law and criminal law do not exist in a vacuum. Both fields of law are subject to social and international developments. This creates scope for creative arguments and defence strategies.
What is your particular expertise and how did you develop it?
In my practice, I deal with large-scale, cross-border tax and criminal investigations that involve tax fraud, money laundering, forgery of documents and corruption. This means that I tend to play multi-level chess a lot. That keeps me on my toes.
What is your definition of a good attorney?
Clients are usually rattled by a tax or criminal investigation. A good attorney communicates clearly and navigates their clients through the process by delivering tailor-made services.
What can you share about your private life?
I like to spend time with other people. That is why, in my spare time, I meet up with family or friends when I can. We either just hang out or we cook together, play board games or go to festivals. To stay fit, I take spin classes or go swimming.
