Why are you working at Hertoghs?
I am fascinated by the area at the interface of procedural tax law and criminal law. Hertoghs chose this combined specialisation three decades ago and has since become the absolute leader in this field in the Netherlands. What I see time and again is that we offer added value to our clients when they have ended up in a dispute with the authorities.
What attracts you in Hertoghs’ areas of expertise?
I enjoy fighting for the rights of my clients when the authorities are bearing down on them. In many cases, the authorities took the first step, for instance by imposing tax assessments or by calling in the tax investigation service. My job is to balance out the scales.
What is your particular expertise and how did you develop it?
My expertise is assisting clients in tax fraud cases and tax audits. These cases typically involve weighing whether it would be best to lodge or continue legal proceedings or to seek an out-of-court settlement. The client’s best interest is always my first priority.
What is your definition of a good attorney?
A good attorney has an innate ability for critical thinking and knows how to change course when circumstances call for it, without losing sight of the client’s best interest. For our clients discussions do not necessarily result in being ‘right’ or ‘wrong’.
